On Saturday 16th June 2018, 5 Clark Contracts employees along with 17 other cyclists took part in a cycling challenge for Rothesay based charity, Calum’s Cabin.

The event, has been running annually since 2015 and this year the group faced some of the worst weather conditions.

Participants kicked off at 8am with the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay where they cycled around the Isle of Bute before catching the ferry from Rhubodach to Colintravie, with the route then leading them to Portavedie, where they had a quick coffee break.

The group then completed the 20 mile cycle to Colintraive, where they met at the Colintraive Hotel for lunch, luckily the sun began to shine before the short ferry to Rhubodach. From there the cycle continued to Straas where the group visited Calum’s Cabin before continuing back to Rothesay.

The riders then tackled the iconic 12 hairpin Serpentine Climb stopping at the top for a quick refuelling stop kindly provided by the Bute Wheelers, before visiting Calums Cottage and then catching the ferry back to Wemyss Bay.

Clark Contracts provided a support van and volunteer driver who accompanied the cyclists carrying food, water and emergency bike repair equipment.

Calum’s Cabin is a charity set up by Caroline and Duncan Speirs, parents of Rothesay boy, Calum Speirs, who died 13 months after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Calum and his family wanted to create a place where other children and their families who are dealing with cancer could come for respite. Read more about the charity here.
