Four joinery apprentices who are part of the Clark Contracts Academy have completed their end of first year skills assessment this week at West College Scotland.
The bespoke Clark Contracts test was created by Academy Director, David Cooper and involved our apprentices being timed whilst forming finished partitions to accommodate a door and frame which was fixed to the partition and finished with facings and skirting’s including internal and external mitres. The unique test ensures the apprentices can produce a high quality finish within the required timescales prior to progressing to the next year of their apprenticeship.
The challenge took place at West College Scotland’s Paisley campus where the four are attending college whilst working with Clark Contracts.
The four apprentices are; Ryan Goodwin from Barrhead, Dominic Larkin from Castlemilk, Stewart Smillie from Dumbarton, and Anthony Boyle from Falkirk and they are being mentored by colleagues who also began their careers as apprentices at Clark Contracts and have now progressed through the company’s training programme to become Site Supervisors and Site Managers.
David Cooper, Academy Director, Clark Contracts said “It is fantastic to see how far our first year apprentices have progressed since starting with us in July 2015 and I look forward to watching them continue to improve whilst they complete their apprenticeship with us. It has been great to partner with West College Scotland to deliver this assessment and I would like to thank them for their help and continued support in training our apprentices”.
Tommy Campbell, Head of Construction, West College Scotland, said “It is a pleasure to work in partnership with an external stakeholder such as Clark Contracts to support the training and development of West College Scotland Apprentices. The College strives to work closely with local employers and has developed many bespoke training programmes for the sector. We continue to share ideas with and encourage support from employers to help us shape the curriculum of the future.”
10 new apprentices have joined Clark Contracts Academy in their 2016 intake and will be beginning their college courses later this month, training to become qualified joiners, bricklayers, decorators and plasterers.
