Going back to where you started rang true this week for Steve Clark, the founder of Clark Contracts, the Paisley based construction firm.
25 years ago, while still a one man operation, Steve decided to grow the business and visited his accountants in Glasgow for advice. Disappointed at their lack of ambition, Steve left dejected and on his way back, passed the then Cooper & Lybrand's office at Highlander House in Waterloo Street where posters promising grant support for business plans attracted his attention. He recalls wandering in to the extremely plush surroundings and wading his way through the shag pile carpet to request a meeting. The business plan was duly completed and the rest is history.
Today, Clark Contracts employs 230 with offices in Paisley and Edinburgh, the company is on target to achieve a record turnover of £42 million this year and has just moved in to brand new corporate HQ near Glasgow Airport with plans to recruit 75 more people.
So, it was a very fond sense of déjà vu this week when Clark won a £2.5 million contract to refurbish…you've guessed it…Highlander House.
