Improving Accessibility at Royal Scot Court, Bathgate

October 1, 2026

We’re pleased to have supported Cairn Housing Association in improving accessibility for residents at Royal Scot Court, a retirement court in Bathgate.

As part of the works, a new FlexStep accessibility system was installed following grant funding from the Scottish Government. The innovative system functions as a conventional staircase for everyday use but can transform into a platform lift, providing improved access for wheelchair users and residents with mobility requirements.

Previously, around five steps separated part of the court from residents’ homes and key communal areas, including the lounge and outdoor spaces, creating accessibility challenges for some residents.

The completed works have already had a significant impact. One long-standing resident, who had previously been largely unable to leave her flat independently, is now able to move more freely around the court, visit family and friends, access the communal lounge and attend appointments more easily. The new system is also helping other residents move between their homes and communal areas.

The project demonstrates how targeted adaptations to existing buildings can deliver a meaningful improvement to accessibility, independence and quality of life for residents.
